Captain Scott
Captain Scott and his four men tried to reach
Antarctica and they did. They wanted to be the first men there, but they ended
up second men there. They made it there but not back.
Getting Ready
Scott did not miss a night of sleep wondering
if he had packed everything to stay alive. It was 1911 and there were not big
planes like there are now. They had to walk the whole way! They didn’t have a
big variety of food. All they had to eat was cocoa, sugar, biscuits butter and
a really dry meat. They had so many things they had to take but who was going
to carry the sledges full of gear? They some ponies but, unfortunately, they
were too heavy for the ice and the men ended up eating up eating them.
The Problems along the way
They also had to kill and eat the dogs which
they had brought along. They were starving and had frostbite. They were a day’s
trip from a food depot. Captain Oates made a noble sacrifice. The men refused
to leave him so he went for a walk saying to the men: “I am going for a walk. I might be back, but don’t wait for me!”
Arriving
They arrived to found out that they had lost
the race to Norwegian Roald Amundsen by a couple of days. They had walked
thousands of miles for nothing. That is not all they lost. On the way back they
lost their lives. Captain Scott’s last line in this life was: “It seems a pity that I can write no longer
but for Gods sakes look after our people.”
